Our Cool Kids Campaign is dedicated to improving the quality of life for pediatric oncology patients and their families while they are going through the trauma of a cancer diagnosis and its treatments.
Cancer creates an instant crisis in a family. Fear and anxiety are the main emotions young people feel after learning of their illness and what they are about to face. Sadness and depression often quickly follow. Our goal with the Cool Kids Campaign is to help lessen these tragic effects on the families. Research shows that among many other things, making sure there is "fun and pleasure in every day and using distractionary measures such as humor (American Cancer Society)" helps alleviate some of the stress. Kids with cancer are still normal kids. Through discussions of the needs of these children and their families, our programs have included:
- We are proud to be the publishers of the Cool Kids Connection. This one of a kind newspaper goes out to each hospital that treats childhood cancer. The paper is full of the information that the kids send us, about cancer, about being a kid, anything they want to read about.
- Care packages sent directly to the kids at their homes. These care packages are filled with all kinds of fun items based on a wish list the kids download from this website and fill out. Requests range from toys, gift cards, music cards, restaurant cards and books.
- Cool Kids Family Support Fund - This fund is currently being tested at University of Maryland Medical Center. In an effort to help ease the financial burden of families living with cancer, the Cool Kids Campaign will pay the bills of families who have gotten behind due to the cancer diagnosis of their child.
- "End of chemo" cakes for their celebrations as each child comes off treatment.
It is our hope that the Cool Kids Campaign will be able to brighten the lives of these children who are otherwise dealing with pain and sadness on a daily basis. We are looking forward to working with these hospitals as we fine tune our programs and purpose.
